Leah's Practicum Class Journey

 Leah Beery Journal #3 February 10th - 14th Agriculture Education Cody High School Mr. Troy Wiant Hours: 3 hours February 11th Discuss diseases in livestock with students Observed class How does your teacher demonstrate intercultural competence as he/she implements classroom management strategies?       My mentor teacher demonstrates intercultural competence by getting to know all his students. During all his different classes he is good at connecting with every student in the class and asking how their lesson could relate to their lives. Like for example part of his lesson he was asking students about what livestock diseases are common in cattle and horse. He personally asked one student what disease they have most common in their cattle herd, but then later asked another student about if she has had any of the diseases discussed in her horses.      In Mr. Wiant's classroom this week I got to observe for different class periods that were the first year agriculture class, animal science, and plant science.       I got to observe his management strategies with his classes. Each class has the routine of getting their note taking books out of the back cabinets in his classroom, then sit and pay attention to what Mr. Wiant has planned for the day. He makes sure there is no funny business going on and starts teaching. Mostly lectures to the students but makes sure to asks question to keep the students engaged as much as he can. He teaching with interactive videos that keeps    the students interested in the topic.        Mr. Wiant as great relationships with his students. He talks to all the students as they make their ways into the classroom. He give updates the students about FFA projects or asking them about their days. He opens his classroom up to lots of students....

         My first visit with Mr. Wiant in the agriculture classroom in the high school was good! I got to talk to Mr. Wiant about times that would work for me to be in the classroom and all about the practicum handbook/program. Mr. Wiant and the students were very welcoming to me. I got to know some of his FFA officers pretty well and talked about their futures as most of them are seniors. It was a chill and welcoming first visit. All the Cody High School staff was very welcoming as well!!        I went and helped teach a lesson for the first time to the to the middle schoolers  about animal identification . It was so fun to meet and interact with all of students! They are a great group of students that are interactive and show interest in learning about agriculture.
